ADOPTING A FRIEND

We always have dogs that are looking for good people to take care of them. The adoption fee is between $35 and $60 (depending on any additional medical care the dog has received outside of a vaccination and worming). This includes an Ohio dog license current for the year and a free office visit from a veterinarian in Geauga County. All dogs receive a vaccination and worming before they leave the Shelter.

We do our best to screen the dogs so as to provide you with as much information as possible. We pride ourselves in learning as much about a dog as possible when it goes up for adoption. We take the best care we can with what we have and the help of our volunteers.

................................................
The Geauga County Dog Shelter & Warden's Office is a county run facility that helps reunite lost dogs with their owners. Like other shelters and Humane Societies, we try our best to find good homes for every adoptable animal that is homeless. Since the beginning of 2003, we have reunited or adopted 97% of the animals who have found their way to our door.

FACT or FICTION
A myth about the Geauga County Dog Shelter & Warden's Office is that we hold dogs for only three days. This is FALSE. There are NO limits on the time that we will allow a dog to stay in our Shelter. As long as we have the space, and the health of the animal is good, we will keep them as long as it takes to find them the proper home. Another myth that plagues our Shelter is that we use tax dollars to run the facility. This too is FALSE. The Shelter is designed to be self-supportive from the general fund. Our office is run by the dog license fees, adoption fees, impound fees and DONATIONS.

................................................

DONATIONS we receive help to make the lives of the animals more comfortable while they are with us. One of the main things that can be donated is TIME. These animals are often scared and uncertain of what lies ahead for them. Just taking some time to go for a walk, sit in their pen with them, talk with and pet them, can be the difference between an adoptable dog, and a dog that is shied away from due to his uncertain personality. ALL of these dogs deserve to live a happy, safe, and loving life. This is the goal of the Warden, his employees and all of the volunteers.

We always are in need of donations, both monetary and items such as food, treats, toys, bedding, collars, leashes, feeding and water bowls, large trash can liners and cleaning supplies. Right now with spring here and summer close by we could also use brooms, hoses and gardening supplies.

If you are unable to get to the shelter to donate any of these items, arrangements can be made for them to be picked up. Monetary donations are always appreciated and will be used in the areas most needed at any give time.

VOLUNTEERS are always NEEDED to come and walk the dogs. Please call or email for more information.

If you can donate time, money or supplies, we are very grateful and the dogs appreciate it too! Please contact one of our staff members or volunteers. Thank you!

Thank You for your interest and concern for the dogs.

DOG LICENSES - Protect your dog

Having a dog license helps protect your pet if it becomes lost. When a dog comes in without a license, by law we hold the dog for 3 days and then put the dog up for adoption. When a dog comes in WITH a license, we immediately contact the owner to come and claim their pet. WITH a dog license, we will keep the dog for up to 14 days in order for the owner to come and claim it. Once a dog is up for adoption, There is NO set time limit on the length of time we will keep the dog. As long as health, temperament, and space allows, we will keep them until they are adopted to a loving and proper home.
